Milwaukee Habitat Welcomes New COO

Today, Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity is thrilled to announce Al Smith as our new Chief Operating Officer. Smith joins our organization as we scale to meet ambitious goals of doubling our impact by 2028.

“Stepping into the role of COO at Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity is both an honor and a profound responsibility. As a Milwaukee native, it’s a unique opportunity to drive meaningful change, fostering communities built on compassion, resilience, and hope. Together, we will build not just homes, but brighter futures for those in my community,” Smith says.

Al’s career reflects a robust combination of leadership in operations, finance, team management, and strategic planning. His deep-rooted involvement with the organization includes a term as Vice President of Milwaukee Habitat’s board of directors under current CEO, Brian Sonderman.

“Al’s deep appreciation for our mission, commitment to organizational excellence and collaborative leadership style will help Milwaukee Habitat achieve our ambitious strategic priorities.” Sonderman says.

Al will fill the vacancy created by Ann Van Dunk, Milwaukee Habitat’s retiring COO.

“I’ve been honored to serve at Habitat for over 25 years and could not be more thrilled to pass the baton to Al, a man I know to be multi-talented, kind, and genuine. His knowledge, neighborhood and industry experience, and his passion for Habitat’s mission will enhance the expertise and growth of our staff and programs,” Van Dunk says.

Al Smith will officially begin his tenure as COO with the organization in September.
