Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity
This year marks an extraordinary milestone for Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity: our 40th anniversary. As we reflect on our journey, we are filled with profound gratitude for the countless volunteers, donors, and partners who have shaped our mission to make affordable homeownership a reality for families in our community.
Our story began when a group of determined individuals gathered with Habitat for Humanity founder Millard Fuller to tackle Milwaukee’s housing crisis. With no funds, their determination created Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity. From those early days of rehabbing homes, fueled by the dedication of local churches and volunteers, we have grown into a pillar of this city.
Milestones like the Jimmy Carter Work Project in 1989, which built six homes in just five days, demonstrated the power of collaboration and resilience. Partnerships, like our long-standing relationship with Sargento Foods since 1992, have helped sustain our growth. Today, our Habitat ReStores have grown to generate nearly $4 million annually, supporting our mission while offering affordable goods to the community.
As we reflect on that last 40 years, we look back to see the long term impact affordable homeownership has had on Habitat families. Families like the Tuckers, who moved into their Habitat home in 2003, remind us why this work matters. For the Tuckers, their Habitat house provided space, security, and opportunity for their family of nine. It became a cornerstone for their family’s journey to financial stability, giving them the ability to save and invest in their children’s futures. Please take the time to view their story below.
Over the past 40 years, nearly 1,500 families have found stability through Milwaukee Habitat, and we’ve tithed over $5 million globally to extend our impact. While we celebrate our achievements and the impact we’ve made, we recognize that the affordable housing crisis continues to pose significant challenges. Despite our growth and progress, there is still much work to be done.
As we look ahead to the next 40 years, we are committed to making an even greater impact and helping more families achieve the dream of homeownership. Thank you for being an integral part of this journey. Together, we’ve built far more than homes—we’ve built hope and a brighter future.
In Partnership,
Brian Sonderman
Chief Executive Officer
Together, We Build
In "Together, We Build," Habitat homeowners Johanna Jimenez (since 2007), Debra and Johnny Tucker (since 2003), and Cheryl Hayes (since 1989), share how Habitat homeownership has helped them build generational wealth, financial stability, and the security of a place to truly call home.
2024 New Construction Highlights
Lead Abatement and Weatherization
In addition to building new homes and offering affordable repairs, Milwaukee Habitat is expanding its impact by helping even more families create safer living environments. Through a partnership with the Milwaukee Health Department, the Milwaukee Environmental Collaboration Office, and the Wisconsin Department of Public Services, Habitat provides free lead abatement and weatherization services to households in need.
Stephanie, a local homeowner, benefited from the program when her house, built before 1978, underwent lead hazard remediation. Along with eliminating lead risks, her home received crucial upgrades, including new windows, insulation, and improved ventilation systems.
“Habitat is there to navigate the process and advocate for you. I trust that,” Stephanie said. “I will have peace of mind having a safe house.”
Jeremy Belot, Sustainability Program Coordinator for the Milwaukee Environmental Collaboration office shared that:
“Working with Milwaukee Habitat on a program that brings multiple government resources and departments together to integrate lead remediation and energy efficiency interventions has resulted in life changing results for Milwaukee families.”
This fully grant-funded program prioritizes households with children, improving homes by combining lead remediation with energy efficiency upgrades. It’s a transformative initiative that’s creating healthier, safer, and more sustainable homes for families throughout Milwaukee
Public Sector Support
Support from the public sector plays a vital role in increasing Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity’s capacity to build and repair homes across Milwaukee. Milwaukee Habitat embraces a bipartisan approach to working with partners at the city, county, and state levels. This year, we were honored to have received nearly $5 million in grants.
Aja’s home was built thanks to grants from the City of Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, and the WI Department of Administration, alongside contributions from individual and corporate donors.
When thinking about walking through her front door for the first time, Aja shared, “I know I am going to have butterflies. I’m so excited. I’m going to take it all in and appreciate the whole experience.”
Aja’s excitement about her new home reflects the profound impact that partnerships like these have on individuals and families, a sentiment echoed by those working to make such opportunities possible.
“Milwaukee County is proud to partner with Habitat for Humanity,” said Connor Goggans, Senior Real Estate Project Manager, Milwaukee County Housing Division.
“This underscores our shared commitment to providing safe, high-quality, and affordable homeownership opportunities while advancing racial equity and strengthening community ties."
volunteers
Milwaukee Habitat’s construction, ReStore, and deconstruction volunteers who regularly volunteer their time - affectionately known as “Habituals” - came together to raise over $75,000 to sponsor and build a new home in the Harambee neighborhood.

building globally
Since our founding in 1984, we’ve worked to build safe, affordable homes here in Milwaukee and across the world, believing that distance does not play any role when we want to achieve the common goal of eliminating poverty housing.
In countries around the globe, families are living in desperate conditions. With your support, we’re partnering with Habitat for Humanity affiliates in other countries, donating 10% of our unrestricted funds to ensure even more families have a safe, decent place to sleep at night —a donation known as tithe.

Brewers Kick Off the Build Season
Brewers Community Foundation, the charitable arm of the Milwaukee Brewers, and Bader Philanthropies, Inc. joined forces to celebrate 2024’s new construction season. Brewers players Brandon Woodruff, Joey Ortiz, and DL Hall traded their ball caps for hard hats and helped raise the first wall of a new home for Bernes. Bernes cannot wait to be a homeowner.
“I’m so happy to be in this program,” she said. “When I get the keys, at first, I’ll have to breathe and really take it in. I will feel proud of myself that I took that huge step."
Women Build 2024
Women Build brings together friends and colleagues from across our community to raise funds and walls – and to help women rise strong. Habitat provides the tools and equipment. Event sponsors and volunteers provide the hands and heart. 120 women, representing 20 teams, volunteered during the month of August, raising over $50,000 to help sponsor Jessica’s home. With a heart full of gratitude and hope, Jessica is looking forward to creating new memories.
“I will feel blessed, overjoyed, and excited,” she said. Sponsored by: Thrive Realty, Catalyst Construction, General Mills, Harris Family Dental, MGIC, We Energies
Sargento’s Support made Tayana’s Home Possible
Tayana was joined at her home dedication by Louie Gentine, Chairman and CEO of Sargento, and Bango, the official mascot of the Milwaukee Bucks. In addition to annual support, Sargento makes a donation for each opening tipoff the Bucks win. Those dollars helped support Tayana’s home. Tayana is building equity in an asset that will benefit her family for years to come.
“I’ve been renting for long enough,” she said. “I’m excited to actually get something that’s my own.”
Sargento was Milwaukee Habitat’s first corporate partner in 1992. The company has sponsored 37 homes, donated $2.6M, and volunteered 27,000 hours on the build site.
Powering Milwaukee Forward
Milwaukee Habitat is one of ten local nonprofits selected to receive $100,000 each as part of Powering Milwaukee Forward, a new philanthropic effort aimed at improving access to basic needs within Milwaukee’s underserved communities.
GE HealthCare, the GE HealthCare Foundation, the Charles Antetokounmpo Family Foundation, and the nonprofit grantees will work together to help Milwaukee residents thrive. Powering Milwaukee Forward will strive for lasting impact through the lens of social determinants of health: housing, education, healthy food, safe physical environments, and maternal healthcare.
Accunet sponsored a new home for Naidia through their $75,000 Framing the Future Gala challenge match. Total support tops $850,000 over two decades. Naidia believes that becoming a Habitat homeowner will change her life. “It’s a milestone,” she said. “I’ve moved to the next level with something I’ve been dreaming of doing.”
For three decades, Bank of America has helped Habitat families across the country build and improve places to call home. Here in Milwaukee, their support helped Ashley fulfill her dream of becoming a homeowner. “I want to pass down generational wealth to my kids,” Ashley said. “They will always have somewhere to go.”
Friendship House’s financial support has helped build, rehab and repair 45 homes since 2012, including a new home for Morgan. Morgan is determined to accomplish her dream of homeownership. “It will be a big weight lifted off my shoulders,” she said. “It’s yours and no one can take it away from you.”
Hydrite sponsored their first home in 2024. “The experience was truly rewarding,” said Julia Danes, Human Resources Generalist. “Watching the project come to life – from the foundation to a finished home – was inspiring, especially knowing it will provide a family with a place to call their own. Our employees found great fulfillment in being part of something so meaningful.”
Thirty-two families have moved into Komatsu-sponsored homes since 2011, including Alphonso. Total support tops $2.8 million from employee and corporate giving and an annual supplier golf outing. Alphonso is ready to provide a comfortable space for his family. “I see it as a good investment,” he said. “It’s for my kids. They always have a place to stay.”
MGIC has donated over $600,000 since 1997. The company made a significant gift of new office furniture for our renovated headquarters and sponsored Derrick’s new home. “I didn't think I would ever be at a spot to get a house,” he said. “I am so excited to decorate. I’m going to have a garden in the backyard.”
Milwaukee Tool topped $1,000,000 in lifetime financial support and donated products in 2024. Their tools are a fixture in our warehouse and on the construction site. Our staff and volunteers used them to build Monica’s home. “Moving in will be like a breath of fresh air,” she said. “Homeownership is an investment to put into myself.”
Wells Fargo has donated $1.5 million over the past two decades. The bank’s $100,000 donation supported Deana’s house. She envisions her home as a foundation for her family’s future: “I am a builder, I am a restorer, and I am an owner ... of my future, my dreams, my gifts and talents, and soon, my home.”
The Zilber Family Foundation donated $250,000 for new construction and critical home repair in the Lindsay Heights neighborhood. “The foundation is dedicated to enhancing the well-being of individuals, families, and neighborhoods,” said Demetria Smith, Senior Program Officer. “Together, we are improving access to quality, affordable, and stable housing.”
gala
over half a million raised at 2024 gala
On the evening of October 10th, Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity hosted the annual Framing the Future Gala from inside our early 20th century woodshop. As we celebrated 40 years of building homeownership, the event welcomed over 325 attendees and raised $504,100 to build safe, affordable housing in our city.
This year’s event was chaired by Matt Burow of Three Leaf Partners and Catalyst Construction. The funds raised are crucial to Milwaukee Habitat’s work to help local families break down the barriers to first-time homeownership.
As the evening concluded, the generosity of the community not only celebrated Milwaukee Habitat’s past, but also ignited hope for a future where everyone has a place to call home.

remembering President Carter
At the end of 2024, President Jimmy Carter passed away at 100 years old. President Carter’s dedication to Habitat for Humanity created a lasting legacy and his efforts shone a spotlight on the global need for affordable housing and brought hope to families around the world. In 1989, he led the Carter Work Project in Milwaukee, which was one of the most ambitious builds in Milwaukee Habitat’s history. Thanks to the Carters and more than 1,000 volunteers, six homes were completed in just five days.
The success of the Carter Work Project and the Carters’ unwavering dedication brought significant attention and support to Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity. This momentum propelled the organization forward, helping it grow into what it is today.
Cheryl Hayes, a Milwaukee Habitat Homeowner from the Carter Work Project, shares her reflections on this transformative event, offering a heartfelt glimpse into that memorable June of 1989 when President Carter’s presence made a profound difference in Milwaukee:
Please join us in remembering him and celebrating the profound impact President Carter made around the world.
"I'm Home"
“[This program] helped me become such a powerful woman, not only for myself but for my children. It has let me know anything I put my mind to is possible, whether it’s a long term or short term goal. You can do anything that you can believe.”
