For Her Children: Yuki Builds a Home with Habitat

Yuki has been dreaming of becoming a homeowner for more than 10 years. Growing up, she lived in Japan in a house with her family. She moved to Milwaukee 20 years ago and has been renting since.

When she began exploring the idea of buying a home, she discovered how overwhelming the housing market can be.

“I have been looking at buying a house for 10 years or more,” Yuki said. “I didn’t think buying a house was so complicated. It’s not like buying a car; it’s more complicated.”

Today, Yuki and her three teenage children live in a rental home. Although she likes the house in general, she knows there’s better out there.

“The house we are renting right now is really old,” Yuki said. “I still like it, but for my children, I want more.” 

As Yuki continued searching for a better place to call home, she heard about Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity on the news. 

Through Milwaukee Habitat’s Affordable Homeownership program, first-time homebuyers like Yuki can build a brand-new home and pay an affordable mortgage. 

“I can do this because of Milwaukee Habitat’s help,” Yuki said. “This is hard for me to do by myself, so without your help, I don’t think I could.”

From the beginning of this journey, Yuki’s children have been by her side. She knows this home will mean just as much to them as it does to her.

“It’s going to be big for them,” Yuki said. “We do everything together, me and my kids. I think this process will be the same way. We will work together to have this house.”

Soon, Yuki and her children will walk through the door to their new home, knowing they finally have a place to call their own.
