A Repair That Brings Back Confidence
Vanissa has owned her home for 25 years and currently lives there with her grandkids. After a recent accident, she realized that she needs to make changes to her bathroom for herself and her family.
Vanissa’s shower and bathtub were not accessible for her and because of the structure and placement, using them was difficult and risky.
“I fell. I don’t want to keep doing this,” Vanissa said. “Fall once, you’ll do it again. I don’t have time to fall again.”
Vanissa knew she needed a repair to keep her home safe. Her daughter purchased a home through Milwaukee Habitat’s Affordable Homeownership program and suggested that Vanissa look into Milwaukee Habitat’s home repair programs.
“Milwaukee Habitat assisted me,” Vanissa said. “They mailed me something to say I was eligible. It was a real nice, smooth process. It wasn’t hectic or challengeable.”
Through the program, Vanissa is now getting a walk-in tub that will make it easier for her to use her bathroom independently.
“It’s going to mean a lot to me,” Vanissa said. “I will feel safe, confident. I can get into my tub and get out no problem.”

Vanissa is grateful to have found a trustworthy program like Milwaukee Habitat’s Critical Home Repair program to bring comfort and safety into her home. Before finding the program, she explored other options but found them unrealistic to pursue.
“I was out shopping for options trying to get it done,” Vanissa said. “They gave me ridiculous prices. I was like give me something better than this. It was expensive.”
She also encountered scams that made it difficult to know which options she could trust.
“I’m scared of scams,” Vanissa said. “There are so many scams.”
For Vanissa, Milwaukee Habitat’s Critical Home Repair program was the best fit for her to make the changes she needed.
“I thank God for programs like this that help seniors,” Vanissa said. “Habitat is just a great program for me.”
Vanissa will now be able to use her bathroom without the fear of falling or getting injured. With a walk-in tub in place, her home is now a safer space for her to live and for her grandchildren to thrive.
