Annual Report 2020

Milwaukee Habitat Homeowner, Haynie Smith, shares his journey to safe, affordable homeownership. Facing eviction early on in his adult life, Haynie built a foundation for a brighter future by partnering with Habitat for Humanity.

a word from our executive director

From all of us at Milwaukee Habitat we hope you and your loved ones are staying healthy and safe through these difficult times. I want to thank each and every one of you who’ve given your time, talent and financial support since this outbreak began. As we’ve adapted to meet the needs of our community, know that your support is making it possible for families to have safe, affordable shelter during this pandemic. We couldn’t be more grateful.

When COVID-19 brought the world to a standstill in March, our organization wasn’t spared in its wake. Our ReStores, build sites and offices were temporarily forced to close. All the while, we knew the hardships of the pandemic were making matters even worse for local families struggling with overcrowded, unaffordable and unsafe housing. In this moment of unprecedented need the response was nothing short of extraordinary.

Staff jumped into action immediately developing protocols to reopen safely and sustainably. Volunteers who couldn’t build during the shutdown pivoted to help distribute masks to those in need. Supporters demonstrated the true spirit of neighborly love by giving generously. It took each and every one of you. Know that we don’t take your kindness for granted.

While it wasn’t the build season we expected going into 2020, 51 families found safety, security and independence because of your support this year. With the tremendous dedication of this community behind us, we’re poised for an even more impactful 2021. We’ll begin raising the walls of new homes in Harambee, help even more homeowners in need of affordable, critical home repair, and open a new ReStore in Franklin.

On behalf of our Board of Directors and all of the families’ lives you’ve touched this year, thank you. Seeing this community come together to support one another has been the light we all need to get through this. You truly embody Habitat’s mission: putting God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope.

With Gratitude,
Brian Sonderman

Thanks to support from Thrivent and the local faith community, Bler and Ku were able to afford to build a brand new Habitat home in Milwaukee’s Midtown neighborhood. Volunteers and supporters joined a car parade to celebrate the family closing on their four-bedroom home.
