Sargento Volunteers Build More Than Homes 

Last week, Sargento employees, including Jasmine Schmitz, spent two days on a Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity build site, helping raise the walls of two brand-new homes.

For Jasmine, volunteering with Milwaukee Habitat is a chance to help other people experience something she knows firsthand. As a homeowner herself, she understands the stability and opportunity that come with having a place to call home. 

“It’s a blessing to be a homeowner,” Jasmine said. “I’m really, really happy to be part of that blessing [for others].”

Jasmine has worked at Sargento for nearly five years as part of the company’s PSU (production, sanitation, utility) team. She was excited to spend time on the build site and appreciated the opportunity to work alongside Milwaukee Habitat staff.

“I’ve learned a lot of things this last day and a half,” Jasmine said. “The staff are super nice and super patient. I know a couple of them by name already. It’s really cool to be able to work alongside them.”

Jasmine is grateful to work for a company that prioritizes giving back to Wisconsin communities. Sargento has been a longtime partner of Milwaukee Habitat, becoming the organization’s first corporate sponsor in 1992. Since then, Sargento has helped transform lives through financial support, volunteer labor, and innovative programs like the Milwaukee Bucks’ Tipoff for Homes campaign.

“I love it,” Jasmine said. “I really enjoy how much they give back and how much fundraising Sargento does. It’s fun to be part of that fundraising… It’s a great way to give back to the community. I give up a couple of dollars out of my paycheck for someone else to gain everything.”

Sargento’s support helps make affordable homeownership possible for Milwaukee families. Milwaukee Habitat partners with first-time homebuyers to build and purchase their homes at an affordable price, helping families invest in the stability and equity of homeownership.

This year, Sargento volunteers are putting that support into action and helping Milwaukee Habitat build two more Sargento-sponsored homes. These will be the 42nd and 43rd homes Sargento has sponsored with Milwaukee Habitat.

Jasmine knows how meaningful it is to have a place to call home, and she wants other families to experience that same sense of stability. 

“It breaks my heart when I see people struggling for homeownership,” Jasmine said. “It lifts my spirits seeing Sargento do something like this for the community, for people to become homeowners. And people with families have less opportunity because they have more mouths to feed. They need a break.”

Together, Milwaukee Habitat and partners like Sargento help families build, purchase, and own a home of their own. 

At the end of Sargento’s week on the build site, two families will be one step closer to having a place to call home. And Jasmine and her fellow volunteers will know they played a part in making that possible.
