Leveling Up: Shawn’s Journey to Homeownership
He is excited about the freedom and opportunity that homeownership can bring.
“I can have a lot more freedom of what I can do in the house and around it,” Shawn said. “I can furnish however I want. I don’t have to answer to anyone.”
After Shawn expressed interest in the Milwaukee Habitat Affordable Homeownership program, a Habitat team member reached out to Shawn and encouraged him to apply.
Now, Shawn is partnering with Milwaukee Habitat to build a brand-new, three bedroom home.
“I don’t want to rent anymore,” Shawn said. “I want to own property.”
He is looking forward to making that goal a reality and bringing all of his passions into one place.
“One room will be my bedroom. One is going to be an office or reading room,” Shawn said. “The third bedroom I want to build a gaming PC in and make a gaming room.”
As part of the Milwaukee Habitat Affordable Homeownership program, Shawn will spend time working on the build site or volunteering in the Habitat ReStores. He is eager to actively participate in the building process.
“I like the idea of having a hand in my house,” Shawn said. “I will be getting a feel for it. I’m looking forward to construction and learning new things.”
Shawn realizes that moving into his new home will not only improve his life immediately but will also open doors for him down the road.
“I see the value in owning property,” Shawn said. “[Later on], I can do whatever I want with the place. I can sell it, or rent it out, whatever I want.”
As Shawn reflected on what homeownership would mean to him, he searched for words that might express that soon-to-be feeling:
“It’s going to feel good…great…awesome….fantastic.”
