A Boss Move

Amanda is ready to stop paying for someone else’s dream and start paying for her own. She has wanted to become a homeowner for some time, but she was unable to find an affordable, move-in ready home. 

“The [houses] I did see needed all types of work, and rent prices keep increasing, increasing, increasing,” Amanda said. “It came down to affordability.” 

While the average cost to rent in Milwaukee is more than $1,800 per month, the average cost to own is more than $2,300 per month. The typical monthly payment to own a brand new home through Milwaukee Habitat’s Affordable Homeownership program is less than $950. That cost difference can result in thousands of dollars saved on housing every single year (source).

After searching on the open market and looking into other programs, Amanda decided to apply for Milwaukee Habitat’s Affordable Homeownership program. 

“With rent prices increasing and quality of housing not being the best, I thought why not just go for it,” Amanda said.

She is now partnering with Milwaukee Habitat to build a brand-new home.

“Moving into a place that’s brand new and I’m the first person to be in it… that’s chef’s kiss! I just wanted to be a homeowner,” Amanda said. “This is mine. It’s my own space.” 

Amanda is excited to decorate her house and truly make it her home. She cannot wait until she gets her keys and the house is officially hers.

“I am going to feel relief [in that moment],” Amanda said. “I made it through the program. I stuck with it. I finally did it.”

When asked what it will feel like to be a homeowner, Amanda said:

“It feels like a boss move.”
