Hsa Yu’s Milestone Moment

As summer comes to a close, we reflect on the highlights of this warm season with Milwaukee Habitat. 

One of our most cherished moments was Hsa Yu’s home dedication. We gathered with Hsa Yu outside her new home, joined by staff, family, friends, supporters, and many others.

During the dedication she shared with us her homeownership journey:

I looked on the open market and when I was going through that, it was kind of expensive. I felt like I could not afford it. Everything is high. 

Maybe one or two years ago, one of my friends told me about the Habitat program. 

I applied for it. Then I got it. I got to do the sweat equity hours. I was like ‘oh cool!’ 

[During the sweat equity hours], I saw the houses around here, and I made a lot of friends. I like the program.

We met a lot of friends that are in the same situation with us. They’re building a new home and they’re first time homebuyers [too]. 

Then, we got the home that our family can live in. When [we] come home, there’s no apartment noise. I work third shift also, so when I came home [to the old place], I couldn’t sleep.

Before, when we lived in a small apartment [my daughter could] not have her own room or have anyone come over or sleepover. So now when she comes home, she has her own room. She really likes the room. She was so happy. She always dreamed of having a big house, and for her this is a big house.
