We’re back with another edition of Good News Tues to spread a little joy from our Habitat family to yours. We’re all in this together. Here’s hoping this brings a little light to your day.
Jasmine’s Growing Her Future
Growth. It’s a theme Jasmine finds throughout her life. An avid home-gardener, Jasmine talked about her love for growing vegetables and having fresh produce in her back yard. She grows the vegetables from seeds inside, then once spring rolls around, gently transfers her small plants to the garden beds behind the duplex she currently rents. It takes months of effort and care, but in the end she’s rewarded with fresh, healthy and delicious produce for her family. Now, Jasmine is taking that same approach and sowing the seeds for a place she can truly call home.
Right now, Jasmine is renting the upper portion of a duplex with her one year old son Jayden. She sees Jayden as her motivation to become a homeowner.
“He’s my heart,” she says. “That’s the reason why I’m trying to do this.”
When she set out to find a home, she admitted she didn’t know a whole lot about the process. So, she sought home buying counseling from the United Community Center. She learned more about the process and what her options might be. The properties she found in her price range needed a lot of work and she was hesitant about assuming that kind of risk, especially with her young son. That’s when Jasmine turned to Milwaukee Habitat
She loves that Habitat prepares homeowners to be successful through home maintenance and financial literacy education. She’s looking forward to getting out on the build site and learning the skills to preserve her home for years to come. Milwaukee Habitat acquired Jasmine’s future home in the Midtown neighborhood and together they’re in the process of rehabbing it. Just like her garden, she’s putting in the hard work now to see it payoff in the end.
“When I get those keys for the first time I’m going to cry,” she says. “That’s a big accomplishment for me and my baby.”
Soon, Jasmine will have those keys and Jayden will have a place to call home for years to come. Next door to their property is an empty lot, which Jasmine hopes to someday acquire. Her plans: build a community garden.
