Brewers Pitch In On The Build Site

On Friday, Brewers Community Foundation, the charitable arm of the Milwaukee Brewers, and Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation teamed up with Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity to begin building a safe, affordable home in Milwaukee’s Harambee neighborhood. Brewers All Star pitcher, Brandon Woodruff, joined the Famous Racing Sausages and local volunteers to help build the home. Prior to swinging hammers, the Brewers hurler shared his excitement about getting involved.

“We are incredibly proud to support Habitat for Humanity and the impact it has on families and neighborhoods,” said Woodruff, Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity ambassador. “I’m honored to work alongside the future homeowners and many dedicated volunteers to build a new home.”

Woodruff traded in his ball cap for a hard hat, helping to install siding on a new home being built alongside other new Habitat homes on the block.

For more than 15 years, Brewers Community Foundation has partnered with Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity to help break down the barriers to homeownership for local families. The home they were working on today is being purchased by Priscilla.

The rent at Priscilla’s last apartment jumped from $839 per month to nearly $1000. The hike forced them to immediately uproot themselves to a new rental property. It left Priscilla feeling reminiscent of her childhood living situation.

“(When I was growing up) we moved a lot, we changed schools a lot,” she said. “That’s the main reason I crave stability.”

Priscilla, with a little help from Brandon Woodruff (among others), is building that stability from the ground up. She spoke about what this accomplishment is going to mean for her and her daughter Fatou.

“It will be a great source of pride to have my own home, and land I can pass down,” Priscilla said. “It means freedom and autonomy. It means stability for my daughter so that she can focus on school.”

Education is extremely important in their household. Fatou owns a 3.7 GPA, while Priscilla runs an after school program. Having a stable home is going to mean not having to worry about changing school districts in the case they were priced out of their home.

Once she moves in, Priscilla is excited to plant a garden. It’s something she’s always wanted to do, but hasn’t had the opportunity while renting. As the roots in her garden grow, so will the roots Priscilla builds as a homeowner in her new neighborhood.

You can make homeownership possible for more local families.
