Dedication Remarks: “I Built You a Home”

Colette moved into her brand new Habitat home in the spring. As a mother of seven, she wanted to inspire her children and invest in something her family can call their own.

Every time a Milwaukee Habitat homeowner moves into their home, we host a home dedication celebration. Along with family, friends, coworkers, Habitat staff, volunteers, and sponsors, we celebrated Colette’s journey to becoming a first-time homebuyer.

Colette shared these words at her dedication:

I truly appreciate all of your well wishes, encouragement and support. I am blessed to have this opportunity. I would like to thank Habitat for giving my family something we can call our own, a beautiful home.

I want to thank my son for sticking next to me for all these years. You have grown with me though the last 25 years. Thank you for all you do to make sure your mom and siblings never suffer. Give that same strength and encouragement to your daughter. Show her she can accomplish anything. Look, her granny did.

To my son, William, for working so hard and being dedicated to your mom and siblings. Keep going, you got this. 

To Poppy, thank you for stepping up and understanding me and my why. I see your growth and maturity. Continue to work hard and do your best. Know our motto: family first.

To my Caleb, you are my last son. So it seems hard trying to find your way at times. Because your brothers got it. Mommy sees all your accomplishments and dreams too. You are a perfect gentleman. You are destined for greatness. Keep going baby. Momma gotchu.

Lea… oh, this is hard… I want you to know that you are perfect… You are.

Lacy, Lacy don’t play. Thank you for watching over my kids, while I focus on building this house. You made sure everything was good and if you know Lacy, you know she got Libby somewhere next to her. 

Libby, I’ll never forget every time I put on my Habitat shirt to go to work. You’d say “Mommy, you going to build us a house?” Yes baby, I built you a home. You are doing something my other kids never experienced, you never have to move again. 

Thank you to my friends, family, coworkers, my residents, you all have given me so much support. My St. John’s team… y’all I got the best job in Milwaukee. My supervisors, my coworkers Jeff, Laura, Lilly – They helped put my siding up. That’s my team. 

I’d like to thank my friend, Mo and the St Marcus family for giving families like mine the tools to rise. Mo, your gift has made me a better person. With God by my side, all things are possible. 

My dear friend, Inga, who grows me plants, I want to thank you for being by my side the whole entire time.
