A Place to Gather: Sherry’s Home Dedication
Sherry, a mother of six and grandmother of six, is proud to officially call herself a Milwaukee Habitat homeowner.
When a Milwaukee Habitat homeowner like Sherry closes on their home, we gather with family, friends, and supporters for a home dedication celebration. This special moment takes place outside the home and honors the hard work and dedication that made homeownership possible. During her dedication, Sherry shared:
“First and foremost I want to thank God for the opportunity to be part of Habitat. I want to thank Habitat, the volunteers, the sponsors, the staff, and everyone connected.
I want to be a homeowner because I want to leave a legacy for my children. I want to have a place for my children and grandchildren to gather. My daughter said last night this is going to be so much like grandma’s house when we used to come over and gather together. I really wanted community, family, and just be that open space. Be a light to the neighborhood and community.
What stands out to me in the process, I was able to meet other people, like my neighbors and other neighbors on Brown street. We call ourselves the Brown Street Girls.
We’re a community. And we were able to meet other people and I was able to meet homeowners that went before me that are a part of Habitat. And they were telling me different things, and we’d exchange phone numbers. They said ‘if you need anything, reach out.’ It is community, being able to connect with others, putting in the work and being consistent in the process.
My family also helped me with those sweaty equity hours so I’m so thankful for them as well.”
At the end of the celebration, Sherry finally cut the ribbon in front of her new home.
That ribbon cutting marked the start of a home built for gathering. A place where family and community can come together and support one another.
