Full Circle: From Mom’s Habitat Home to His Own
“I wanted one because I grew up in one.”
When Alphonso was thirteen years old, his mom became a Habitat homeowner and he spent his teenage years living in that house. Now, Alphonso is working to give his kids the same stability.
“I saw her do it and how she worked for it,” Alphonso said. “When I had children I figured it would be the safest option. She did it for us and I wanted to do it for my kids too. I think by growing up in a Habitat home, it showed me that I can do a lot more. That home was nice. Everyone used to come over. It made me think outside the box. I couldn’t help but go for it.”
Alphonso is partnering with Milwaukee Habitat to build a brand-new home for himself and his three children. Having grown up in a Habitat house himself, he already understands the quality and value his new home will offer.
“I see it as a good investment,” Alphonso said. “It’s not for me; it’s for my kids. Just like my mom did for me. If they don’t have [a place] to go, they will always have a place to stay. [I could] give it to my kids, give them their first starter home.”
Alphonso’s oldest daughter, who is currently sixteen, has been pushing Alphonso to buy a home for some time now.
“My sixteen year old has been with me for so long,” Alphonso said. “Now she’s excited… It will have a positive effect on her to see that I did something I said I would.”
Alphonso also has a five-year-old daughter and a two-year-old son. He is ready to move into his new home and provide a safe and comfortable space for his family.
“I will probably get teary eyed,” Alphonso said. “I don’t want to, but I probably will for a couple minutes. Reality is going to set in.”
As he looks forward to the future, Alphonso knows that this new home isn’t just a place for his family to live—it’s a testament to his commitment and a symbol of the legacy he’s creating, just as his mother did before him.
