Good News Tues. – August 18th

We’re back with another edition of Good News Tues to spread a little joy from our Habitat family to yours. We’re all in this together. Here’s hoping this brings a little light to your day.

A Home For Family

Family is extremely important to Krysten. Gathering with one another for holidays is something she truly enjoys. When it comes to determining who will host Thanksgiving, Krysten is always first to raise her hand. However, Krysten’s former duplex made it difficult. Her two bedroom, one bathroom upper unit didn’t have a whole lot of space. Not to mention, she didn’t have a backyard where the kids could play.

When Krysten was growing up, her family owned their own home.

“It’s been in my upbringing,” she says. “Now, it’s my turn.”

Thanks to Habitat’s affordable home ownership program, Krysten was able to build a brand new three bedroom home in Milwaukee’s Midtown neighborhood. With it, she has a more spacious kitchen and a backyard for the kids.

More importantly, she says, is that she’s able to invest in herself and set an example for her six year old son, Ty.

“I want to show him that there are options other than renting,” says Krysten. “Show him that there’s a whole community beyond our door.”

Krysten knew she always wanted to own a home, but when looking into her options on the open market found the process intimidating and confusing. She appreciates that Habitat prepares first time homeowners to be successful.

In addition to spending hundreds of hours helping to build their home and the homes of their neighbors, Milwaukee Habitat homeowners are required to complete financial education and home maintenance courses as part of our program.

When asked how she felt about helping build her home, Krysten responded, “That’s the most rewarding part.”

Now, she’ll be able to host Thanksgiving feasts and backyard BBQ’s in a home she built with her two hands.

You can help more families in our community achieve safety, stability and independence.
