Wendy’s American Dream

We’re back with another edition of Good News Tues to spread a little joy from our Habitat family to yours. We’re all in this together. Here’s hoping this brings a little light to your day.

Wendy’s American Dream

Three years ago, Wendy got the news none of us ever want to hear. Her mother had been diagnosed with cancer. At the time, Wendy was renting a two bedroom apartment where she had just begun a new chapter with her infant daughter, Joy. The second bedroom would have served well as a nursery, but with her mom’s diagnosis, plans changed.

Wendy invited her mother to move into the apartment as they fought against the disease. She admits it was crowded, but Wendy was there for her mom every step of the way. This past December, after battling for nearly three years, Wendy’s mother got the diagnosis they all had been fighting for. She was cancer-free. With her mother back on her feet, Wendy was ready for a home where she and her daughter could make new memories. Something the two could call their own.

“It was part of my American Dream,” says Wendy. “The comfort, the stability, her growing up in one location.”

Wendy looked on the open market for a three bedroom rental and was having a difficult time finding anything decent below $1000 per month. That’s when Wendy came to Habitat. She found out that for under $1000 per month, she’d be able to build a brand new three bedroom home of her own. Instead of paying a landlord, she’d be able to build equity in a home where she wouldn’t have to worry about old leaky windows or an outdated furnace.

Now four years old, her daughter Joy is looking forward to having a room of her own for the first time. Wendy loves interior design and can’t wait to give Joy the “princess room” she’s always dreamed of. At the same time, she’s looking forward to watching Joy grow up in this room.

“She’ll have her own decorative expressions throughout the years,” says Wendy. “The freedom to be the art director of her own space.”

After a difficult three years, Wendy is ready to make new memories in their Habitat home. She loves hosting and is looking forward to creating a space where her family can join together for the holidays. With a little help from people like you, Wendy and Joy will achieve the freedom, stability and space to live their American Dream.
