It’s So Hard…To Say Goodbye

It’s So Hard…To Say Goodbye

“The most important thing is this: to sacrifice what you are now for what you can become tomorrow.” – Shannon L. Alder, author

Today we recognize the tremendous group of six individuals who committed the last year(s) of their lives to helping local families in need of safe, affordable housing. As Construction Crew Leaders in the AmeriCorps program this team learned how to do – and teach – everything from framing walls to drywall to installing flooring and more. While their term of service has come to an end, the homes they’ve built will stand for decades as lasting reminders of their commitment to our community.

Melissa, Thad, Jack, Helena, Natalie & Kaitlyn, you served our organization and this community during one of the most challenging stretches in recent history. We can’t thank you enough for your hard work, leadership, and willingness to put others before yourselves. You truly exemplify what the AmeriCorps program is all about.

AmeriCorps members commit to a term of service, like a domestic Peace Corps, providing crucial support on our build sites and throughout the organization. This year marked the 20th anniversary of Milwaukee Habitat partnering with the AmeriCorps program to help local families in need of safe, affordable housing.

No construction experience is necessary to join the program, so members often come from a wide range of backgrounds and skill sets. As they learn on the job, these AmeriCorps quickly become integral to completing the homes we’re building. They often get to know our future homeowners better than anyone in the organization, as they work side by side to complete these homes.

Do you know someone who has been working at a restaurant or in retail and now would like to move into a different line of work? Do you know someone who is thinking about what their options are after retirement? Do you know someone who is planning a break from their college experience but is wanting to have a meaningful role? We’re now accepting applications for 2021/22 AmeriCorps members to begin in August or January.

Please consider forwarding this on to a future AmeriCorps leader in your life.
